History of Fly Fishing

Fly fishing is a popular sport, but do you know the rich history behind it? When and how did it all begin? Here is a brief summary of the glorious sport:

The Basics

Today, fish are caught by using artificial flies which are cast out on a fly rod and a fly line. The fly line is heavy enough to send the fly to the target, and you use the fly to lure the fish with the promise of food. The first flies were made with all natural materials, but now flies made of artificial materials are more common. The flies are made to look like familiar insects, and the more authentic they look, the more fish people manage to catch.

History

Fly fishers first used artificial lures for bass fishing. Once they saw how effective that method was for catching trout and salmon, they adapted the patterns to make specific bass flies. By the end of the nineteenth century, American anglers like Theodore Gordon began to use fly fishing to catch trout, which made the sport more popular. During the early to mid-twentieth century, the development of cheap fiberglass rods and synthetic fly lines revolutionized the industry and helped to make fly fishing more accessible. By the early 1950’s, fly fishing popularity reached a new peak and has remained a top fishing choice in the decades since.
