How to Match the Right Hook to Your Rig

With all of the different types of hooks and rigs out there, it can be difficult to figure out how to match them. Choose the wrong hook, and the fish may ignore or even eject it.

Here are a few tips for matching the right hook to your rig.

Sharpness

Make sure your hook is sharp, and that it retains its sharpness. Try pulling it over your fingernail—if it slides easily, it’s not sharp enough. If you’re considering a cutting or spade-shape point, keep in mind that these have pros and cons. On the one hand, they grab quickly and have a solid hook set; on the other hand, they leave a bigger hole in the fish’s flesh, which could cause the hook to come loose as the fish struggles to get away.

Lightness

Light wire hooks are best for finesse fishing situations. Standard wire works great for pitching, flipping and other heavy-duty situations. Choose something that’s strong but not overly heavy.

Match the hook bait to the hook

Hold the hook next to the hook bait and see if it looks balanced and even. A small grain of plastic corn can match a size 8 or 10 hook, and a larger 20 mm boilie may require a 4 or 6.
