Northern pike fishing at the Lawrence Bay lodge is undoubtedly an exciting experience. Northern pike are abundant at our location on Reindeer Lake, but they’re a challenge to reel in. While you should certainly be practicing your technique, that’s only half the battle.
In order to make the most of your fishing expedition, you need the right equipment for catching northern pike.
Rod
A 7-foot medium-heavy action stick is standard for pike fishing, but if you throw hefty baits (or are fishing for particularly large pike), consider upgrading to heavy action. Either way, you want a rod that’s strong in the bottom half with some give on top. This will give you a good cast, combined with the toughness you need to go up against a strong fish.
Pro Tip From Lawrence Bay Lodge
Fly rods have been working great for the big northern pike, which love the new presentation of the flies.
Reel
Choose a reel that has a good drag system and allows for a smooth release of the line throughout its range. Try a baitcast reel with 1 gear ratio of 6.3:1 or 7.0:1.
Line
Northern pike are large, aggressive and sharp-toothed. Braided or monofilament line is a good choice since it’s so strong. Monofilament lines should have a strength of at least 14-pound tests. For braid, it’s 50. Make sure to get a wire leader as well, to attach the main line to the lure.
