With spring right around the corner, now is the perfect time to go through all your fishing gear to ensure everything is prepped and ready to go for this year’s spring season.
There are several things you can do that will keep yourself occupied during the offseason and ensure all of your equipment is in good working condition for your first time out on the water.
Whether it be cleaning, preparing your reels and rods, organizing tackle, ensuring you have the necessary supplies, or anything in between, there are many preparations that need to be made to ensure successful fishing this spring.
Prep your reels, rods & more
One of the most important things you can do to prepare for the spring fishing season is to prep your reels and rods. This includes cleaning, lubricating and repairing these items as necessary. Rod handles that have been dirtied with use can be cleaned with a mild soap and warm water.
Aside from your reels and rods, it is suggested to prep and clean all of your fishing tools such as pliers and scissors, as well as any waders, rain gear and other gear you may have.
Remove old line
Although this isn’t everybody’s favorite task, it is very important to remove old lines and fill spools with a fresh line.
Having fresh line on your pole is practically essential for a successful spring season, but many people will put this off until the last minute when they are already out on the water.
When you have a few free minutes this winter, it is suggested to take off that old line that has been sitting in the garage or basement becoming brittle and kinking and re-spooling it with a new, fresh line.
When you reel in that first fish of the year without the line breaking, you’ll be happy you took a few minutes to handle this task.
Organize, assess, restock your tackle box
Another task that will have you prepared for spring fishing is getting your tackle box organized. This includes sorting through your box, repairing gear, then assessing your needs and going to your local shop to get all the new fishing tackle you require.
Keeping an organized tackle box will ensure that lures, reels and other gear are kept in good condition and that you have all the supplies you may have used up last year re-stocked.
